- Among the earliest Maya, a single language was spoken but by the preclassic period they had a large diversity of language.
- Thrived between 250 and 900 CE
- Through the 8th and 9th century Maya went down hill
Religion-
- Religion was the second main force that influenced the daily life of the Maya.
- People in Maya were Polytheistic which means they worship many Gods.
- The people in Maya might worship gods like the Moon Goddess, the Sun God, the Maize God, and the Creator.
- Each of the Gods were believed to control different things. (Pretty simple)
- Mayan people respected the Gods because the Gods could be helpful and harmful.
- People thought that the Gods also needed blood to keep things good or right.
- On special occasions they would make human sacrifices of temples that were higher then other temples because they thought they were closer to the Gods so they could approach them.
- Religious ceremonies would be at the top of these mountain temples.
